ITINERARY
09:00 hrs: Pick up from the hotel in Santiago and drive 62km onwards the Andes across the Maipo river valley. On weekends the locals come out to the street to sell “Empanadas and Pan Amasado” the most typical country meal together with honey, home made marmalade and some wooden handcrafts. 10:00 hrs: Arrive at our river base either at San Alfonso(km 62) or San Jose(km48). Meet our experienced and skilled guides and put on the rafting gear we provide: wetsuit, helmet, paddle jacket and life jacket. The leader guide will speech the group with technical and safety instructions. The Maipo River is rated as a class 4 from November to February (snow melting season) and as a class 3 the rest of the year; in both cases “first timers” are welcomed (no experience required), as well as the experienced rafters. The put-in-point is either at San Alfonso or at El Melocoton depending on the water level. With normal flood (Sept-Nov, Feb-April) we put in the rafts at San Alfonso and run some 16km passing beautiful gorges and agricultural terrain typical of the Chilean countryside. On high flood (Dec-Jan) we skip the upper gorge and put in at El Melocoton running some 10km of very fast water. The take-out point is the town of San Jose de Maipo. Depending on the flood the rapids along the Maipo can be rated class III and IV. 13:30 hrs: Enjoy lunch at a restaurant. Typical meal consists normally of barbecue, grilled fish and salads served with wine and drinks. 15:30- 16:00 hrs: Start driving down to Santiago with stop at the village of La Obra where the small winery of El Raco is located. The name el Raco stands for the warm winter wind that blows in the Andes forecasting the rains. 17:00- 17:30 hrs: Drive back to Santiago arriving at your hotel at 18:30hrs app.
